Tahsildar

Trying the app

Can I look around before entering my own clients?

Yes. On the welcome screen tap Try with sample data. Fictional clients, charges, payments and overdue fees are loaded so every screen has something to show.

How do I remove the sample data?

While sample data is loaded, a banner at the top of the app says so. Tap Delete sample data in that banner and confirm.

The fictional clients are removed together with anything you added while trying the app. Settings you had entered before loading the sample (firm name, IBAN and so on) come back, and you start with an empty ledger.

Excel

How do I import the ledger I keep in Excel?
  1. Tap Import from Excel on the welcome screen, or find it in Settings.
  2. Pick your .xlsx or .xls file in the file picker (from Files, iCloud Drive or an email attachment saved to Files).
  3. Check the preview: number of clients and entries, total owed, dates the app had to estimate, rows without a date, and cards whose balance in Excel does not add up.
  4. If it looks right, confirm the import.

Importing replaces the clients, entries and reminder history currently in the app. A copy of what was there is saved to the automatic backups first, so you can go back.

The file is read on your phone and is not sent anywhere.

Some dates or balances look wrong after the preview

The preview marks dates it had to estimate and lists cards whose running balance in the Excel file is inconsistent. Fix those rows in Excel, save, and choose Pick another file. Nothing is saved until you confirm, so you can try as often as you like.

Can I get my data back out to Excel?

Yes. Settings → Export to Excel prepares a workbook and opens the share sheet, where you can save it to Files, send it by email or open it in another app.

Backups and new phones

How do I make a backup?

Settings → Back up. The app creates a single .json file with all clients, entries, reminders and settings, and opens the share sheet. Save it to Files or iCloud Drive, or email it to yourself.

If you have not saved a backup file for a while, the summary screen reminds you. The file contains client phone numbers and your IBAN, so keep it somewhere private.

How do I restore a backup or move to a new phone?
  1. Install Tahsildar on the new iPhone or iPad.
  2. Go to Settings → Restore from backup and pick the .json file you saved.
  3. Confirm. The data in the app is replaced with the data in the file.

On a phone that already had data, a copy of the previous state is kept in the automatic backups.

What are the automatic backups?

On each day your data changes, the app keeps a copy of it, for the last 60 days, and also takes one before every import, restore or full delete. You can see them in Settings and restore any of them. They live inside the app, so they disappear if the app is deleted; a backup file saved elsewhere is still worth having.

Notifications

How do I turn on notifications?

Open Settings in Tahsildar and switch notifications on. iOS then asks once whether Tahsildar may send notifications; tap Allow.

Notifications are scheduled on the phone itself. They work without an internet connection and nothing is sent to a server.

I tapped “Don’t Allow”. How do I change it?

iOS will not ask a second time. Open the iPhone’s Settings → Notifications → Tahsildar and turn on Allow Notifications. Then return to the app.

Can I hide notification text on the lock screen?

Yes, in iOS: Settings → Notifications → Tahsildar → Show Previews → When Unlocked or Never.

WhatsApp reminders

Does the app send WhatsApp messages by itself?

No. It opens WhatsApp with the client’s number and the message already written. You read it and press Send. Each reminder you open is logged, so the app knows when that client may be reminded again.

Can I change the wording of the message?

Yes. In Settings you can edit the message template; a preview shows how it will look with a sample client, your firm name and your IBAN.

Why is a client not on the reminder list?

A client is listed when their oldest unpaid charge is more days late than your limit and the overdue amount is at least your minimum, and only if they were not reminded within the interval you set. Check these rules in Settings, and check that the client has a WhatsApp number.
